My 86 SE-i flashes the brake lights when I use the rear pedal but not the front lever. Is this a factory feature or possibly aftermarket?
I want to add a set of hyper lites and I think the 'already' flashing brake lights circuit will confuse the hyper lites. If I could have both that would be great but I would want the front brakes to also trigger the flashing. Any thoughts guys? and girls... sorry. -Jason
flashing as in pulsing on and off? aftermarket.... was supposed to get the cagers attention.... drive like they don't knopw you are there anyway
Do you mean that the front brake lever does not activate the brake lights?
If so check the switch under the lever and that the bushing on the lever is not so worn that it prevents the brake from activating the micro switch.
You can unscrew the micro switch and activate it by hand, if the lights illuminate then it has to be the bushing or something preventing the lever from working.
If the lights dont illuminate then remove the wires and short them together, they should light.
if so replace the switch. $8-12
If the lights pulsate from side to side, this is an aftermarket item but it should be activated by both pedal and hand lever
The rear pedal is all that triggers the flashing, and it flashes for a few times then goes solid. I have to figure out how to remove the seat, I think I see some harry homeowner splices under there. -Jason
CHeck your front brake switch. The electrics are connected, if the back one works the brake lights the front one should also.
You have an after market wig wag type add on the brake light which does tend to give a little more visibility to vehicles behind you when your stopping.
It should work with the front brake also
Check the front brake before doing anything else. just pull the wires on the brake lever and turn on the ignition and connect them together. Otherwise you could be chasing your tail trying to find a problem that may not exist.
Sounds like you have a bad microswitch on the front brakes.
I should clarify that the front lever does trip the brake lights, but not flashing, just solid, like normal. -Jason
The PO must have done some weird wiring to have that effect.
Tell me, do the lower brake lights, the ones in the saddlebags, work with the rear pedal, the front brake lever or both?
I shall post part of the schematic for you to trace if needed.
It seems like there could be some iffy wiring done under the seat to accomplish whats happening.
To remove seat see 4th post in this thread

I would guess that the PO may have installed a separate switch to oprate the flashing lights. Looks like you have some rewiring to do.
