Well I went and made an offer and bought the '85 limited. After getting the bike home i found that the problems I initially thought where there were not as serious as I assumed. Got some response from the travel computer, not everything but some stuff. I think cruise does work, well maybe I figred out how to operate it, lol. Got into the fuse panel under the false tank and found the relay for the compressor and upon simply toughing the relay i heard the compressor come on, only thing is, the key was not in the bike it was in the tank lock. Sounds strange to me. Still have the blinkers to check out, and the running lights. I will post some pics real soon. I am so looking forward to working on this bike , it has great potential. So I bought the bike and got it home. Now what? I have ordered a rectifier/regulator which had been removed by p/o and it was apparent that it is fried, i read somewhere it was advised to use OEM so i ordered it from the closest dealer, kinda pricey,$200. I went and bought a volt meter and i downloaded a clymer shop manual. I have the false tank and side panels off and it is a little over whelming looking at all the wiring. Just a little review of what i noticed not working, no blinkers, no cornering light, no high beam on head light, the led screen on the computer doesn't show any display. I did a continuity check on stator and it was good, when i went to start the bike to check the voltage output, now the starter doesn't work, no sound, no click or anything, it does have a significant draw on power because the headight dims. So, when bringing one of these bikes back to life, exactly where do you need to start, am i right in thinking the wiring needs to be checked first? If some of you here will point me in the right direction i will then post in the appropriate forum. Thanks for all of the best wishes and support. wally 85 limited
Hey Wally.. New to the site too...I just bougth a 86 SEI... same machine, diff color.. I used to work for honda during college in 80-85 so it was nice to get back to these great machines myself.. My reg was fried as with the 2 yellow wire connector by the reg... I tried a aftermarket... lasted 20 sec, literally.. they did give me my money, less shipping and handling back without a hassle so I wasn't out much..... ended up buying a OEM unit (SHINDINGEN # SH574A-12) from regulatorrectifier.com for $129... It was as advertised and works great.... I followed the sites advice and hardwired it direct to the stator bypassing the 3 yellow-wire plug by the battery and the two yellow-wire plug by the reg... I also direct wired the two greens directly to the frame...Keep working at the beginning of the electrical system
the infamous stator!! Good luck with starter issues.. again a lot of good info on this site.. Do the stator tests that are outlined well in the site too to make sure it is up to it before you start the rest.. Just put a couple hundred miles on this weekend in SW mich where i live. .Lot of good advice on this site... great people, look forward to meeting up with them.. Good luck...
