but what size socket is needed for the spark plugs on a GL1200. I am trying to remove the spark plugs to replace the timing belts (to make the engine easier to turn). However, the socket I use on my VTX 1300 doesn't fit and the socket I use on my automobiles don't fit either.
Thanks.

That's what I would have thought, but a 5/8" is too big. The previous owner told me he had just replaced the plugs; I guess he used a non-standard sized spark plug.
K Bergen, I'll try an 18mm deep-walled socket.
Thanks.
sparkplug is like kb says its an 18mm/ 3/4" sparkplug,it definitely not a standard which is why normally i have to use the sparkplug tool normally frm the bike tookit
you may be able to get one spec order from an auto parts store or most bike shops should carry this

That sounds correct Ken -- at least for the standard/Iridium plugs/
I recently bought a magnetic spark plug socket -- either from Harbor Freight Tools or Autozone -- which makes changing plugs nearly a pleasure (compared with the old fashioned sockets with a rubber insert). It saves having to fish for the plug in the well when it slips off the rubber insert. Once the plug is unscrewed, it sticks firmly to the magnet inside the socket.
There's a magnetic insert on the market that replaces the old rubber insert
magnetic insert for $3 at eBay which maybe can do the job.

But I can't vouch for this insert -- other than to say that my pricier 18 mm magnetic spark plug socket REALLY makes changing plugs a LOT easier. :YMHUG:
The spark plug takes a 16mm or 5/8". 18mm is not same as a 3/4", 19mm is.

I've got a spark plug in one hand my callipers in the other, it's 18mm.
You might should have your mic checked. 16mm=.625, 18mm=.720

You should have your calculator checked
16mm=0.6299" and 18mm=0.7087". :d :d
BTW: A vernier calliper doesn't go out of adjustment that far unless you really brutalize it.
Once again the spark plug socket size is
18mm.
Maaaa! Come quick, they're fightin' again!
