Hi guys I have a 85 interstate that I'm bringing back to life it sat for 5 years. I'm rebuilding the carbs and when I took the #4 intake off I noticed some rusty looking stuff in the head by the valve stem. I'm not sure what it is or how I should go about dealing with it. The stuff is really fine almost baby powder fine. Should I just clean it ? Should I pull the head? Any thoughts.
More than likely residual Goo from sitting for so long. I would just clean it out. Have you oiled the cylinders and tried turning the engine over yet?

I have not oiled or turned it over yet.
Probably a good idea to remove plugs, have a look inside of the cylinders with a light. If everything ok, spray some oil in the cylinders (plugs still out) and turn the engine over by hand to make sure it's freed up. Re-install fresh new plugs. If you don't know the bike's history, it would be a good time to replace the timing belts.
Also... While the carbs are out, REPLACE "ALL" of the vacuum hoses while your in there. Fuel lines too. Best to do it now instead of later.

Thanks burnout i cleaned that stuff out today, it looks pretty good and no rust on the valve.
