Tape Player/Radio Making Some Very Strange Noises! - chesterwgunn - 06-06-2009
Over the last year, I've been playing my ipod through a cassette adapter in the original cassette player. Up until last week, it played fine. Last week I finished up my Poorboy conversion and took her out for a spin. I had the ipod charged and ready to go. I flipped the switch and it played perfectly for about 5 minutes and then started making the god awful "squelching" type of noise. When I got back, I cleaned the head on the adapter as well as the unit itself. Plugged her back in and again it worked fine for 5 minutes, then the horrendous squelching noise started all over again. I began fiddling with the knobs on my auto-volume control panel and the noise began to oscillate in accordance to the turning of the knobs. For the record, I could never really tell if the auto-volume ever worked to start with . What I mean is that when I would slow down, the volume would decrease, but any manipulation of the knobs seemed to have no effect on the volume.
My question is this, can the auto-volume panel be by-passed? If so, how difficult is it to do.

I can't answer if the auto volume can be by-passed or not, but you said twisting the knob doesn't do anything. Well, the knob adjustment allows the amount of increased volume. For example all the way down there will not be any increase in volume while moving, the more you increase the knob the more volume at hi-way speeds. Now I don't know because I don't recall doing it but if adjusting while moving dose anything or not.

There is a fine difference that can be noticed when turning the knob.
If your traveling at 50MPH set the auto volume at LOW turn up the radio volume to a level where you can hear it. Now traveling at the same speed, turn up the auto volume, you should hear the volume increase.
I travel with my auto volume knob at the center of its travel, I don't usually have to change the radio volume unless I am traveling at high speed on a slab.
You can isolate the auto volume
Take the Blue tape ID Din from the radio and connect it to the red tape ID DIN to the power amp I think it is the proper connection, give it a try.

My auto volume knob work just fine.Did the radio work OK with out Ipod.
I have a sat lite radio on my bike and had a cassette adapter go bad after a year of use.
It made lots of noise.
I replace the cassette adapter and all is good now.
