you'll probably have to remove any floorboards and at least move the engine guards probably and maybe the shifter,the rear exhaust stud needs to be removed to get the starter out,its a tight squeeze,cant recall if the exhaust has to be dropped any,hopefully others will chime in

Floorboards header pipes and engine guards need to come off loose plus one header pipe stud removed for the starter to come out.

If you borrow a pair of car ramps and drive that trike up onto them then you can just use a regular car jack under the engine to lift the front end up.

This would make life a lot easier on your back.

Ya, you don't have to crawl around. You will have to lean a bit so that still may make this hard to do. Don't forget to clean and lube the ORing seal. If you don't do that it makes it tough to get it back in, plus you run the risk of tearing the seal.

I just did a starter rebuild for a friend, just as Neoracer said remove floorboard then the left engine guard and lower the header, remove the rear stud and then the starter will come out.
it's a tight fit but just be patient and it will come.

I am just curious what you found in your friends starter.
I am sure the listening (lol) public might be curious as well.
How many miles are on the bike? Is the bike used for short trips (ie, a bunch of starter usage)
How were the brushes? amount of carbon dust? condition of the grease in the gears?

Thanks for asking, the bike has 160,000 kms (100,000 miles)
He bought the bike a couple years ago but hasn't ridden it much so I've been fixing it up for him and he's riding again this year.
There was a lot of carbon dust in the starter and it made a screaming noise after starting the bike, worn out bushing.
He bought a starter rebuild kit which includes bearings new bushings and brushes, (about $25)
Rebuilt the starter and put it back in the bike and it works perfectly.

When I did mine, the brushes were still very large and there was minimal dust.
My problem was the old grease has become so thick, the stater motor has a hard time spinning freely when the gl1200 engine was hot.
I found a work-around to my slow spinning starter motor when the gl1200 was hot was to open the throttle all the way open BEFORE using the starter button to spin the gl1200 motor to life.
This was just a temporary fix until I was able to get into my starter motor.
(knock-knock) no problems since.

did mine today == rather simple ,remove shifter lever, remove battery cable and 2 bolts
rotate starter downward and around till battery post is facing the motor and the starter will fall out - took 2 hours to remember tho ---LOL
