New Guy Here
Just found this site. Pretty cool.
I own a 2002 GL1800 and just picked up an 86 1200 Aspencade as a project bike.
Only has 27,000 original miles on it. In great shape cosmetically, but has issues from sitting.
Hope to gain some knowledge here.
I am fro Jackson Center OH

Welcome.

The only issues you should have with that bike would be a dirty fuel system, and a possible bad stator.

As for the stator/rectifier issue if it passes the tests then be sure to cut out and hard wire all the plugs from the stator and the rectifier, check and solder the terminals on the main relay, replace the dogbone fuse with a new plug in fuse holder, and you are good to go. If it fails the charging tests then be sure to check out the PoorBoy alternator conversion for a cheaper, much more powerful and reliable alternative.

Welcome and greetings from tropical :d Missouri.

'Sounds like your project bike may be just about ripe for a fuel filter change. At 27K I'll bet the PO didn't even think the bike has one quietly mounted under the gas tank. There are some very nice photos elsewhere online on changing the fuel filer. Although I suppose like most Wingers who rebuild their carbs at the same time they also replace the fuel filter. But I'll also bet lots of rides don't. I'm obsessed because I just recently changed mine (and upon cutting open the old filter, I wondered how any fuel got through it!). The improvement in my '85 Interstate's performance was dramatic from just that simple, inexpensive change. [By the way, I put in a new glass filter -- routinely used in Harleys] What ever you do, don't use the new EMGO filter (made in Taiwan) because they quickly fall apart and can cost you a new carb rebuild as reported elsewhere!

Happy riding!

Hello, and welcome from Georgia.
27K miles is barely broken in. All the answers to any question about your 1200 can be found here...just ask.
Remember, No matter where you go...There you are!

Here is where I have ridden my 1984 GL1200I
I completed the lower 48 states in August 2009, riding the whole way with my Dad
