Will an '84 rear wheel work on my '86 sei?

needing to replace my rear wheel on my '86sei i purchased a used '84 wheel on ebay. will the '84 wheel work? also i understand i must purchase moly 60 grease from honda dealer, for the spider and spline.

I don't see why the wheel wouldn't work. Should be the same. Guess you'll know when you put it on. After all... You already bought it.....

For sure! You must use Honda Moly 60 paste for the hub fingers / bushings, thrust washer and spline's. Replace the hub o-rings while your in there. I also go as far as to apply silicone paste on the ends of the rubber-cush drive. Also check the wheel bearings. Good time to replace them also while the wheel is out. You don't know how many miles are on the wheel that you just bought.

Replace the o-rings at every, or every other tire change. Also liberally apply Moly 60 paste. Not only do the o-rings keep moisture out, but they also keep the moly 60 paste in.

Even the long distance BMW, Yamaha, Kawi, Triumph, etc, guys all use the Honda Moly 60 paste on their shaft drive units. It's the only thing proven to work.....

Unfortunately a lot of the dealers don't use the Moly 60. If you take it to a dealer always ask what they use! #-O

yes the 84-85 rear wheel will fit on an 86 as long as the correct driven flange for the correct year is used,moly 60 and replacement of the o-rings on the driven flange is reccommended,the part # for the spline side of the driven flange is
91358-MG9-003 for both flanges (spline side)
91357-MB0-000 for wheel side of 84/85 flange
91302-MA6-003 for wheel side of 86-87 flange

thanks burnout and neoracer for your insite. i'm glad you guys know this stuff. why don't the dealers have cross reference chart or something. i picked up moly 60 today but didn't know about o-rings. do you think i will hear the clicking noise? i have silcone grease to use on dampen pads. should i use leftover moly on my safari grease fittings?

dealers have a parts list for each bike,its up to us to figure out if the parts are interchangeable,keeps those liability problems from cropping up for them

I would not use moly 60 paste for grease fittings. Made for only high psi "spline" type applications. It's a "never-seize" type compound / consistancy. It would do more harm than good. I only use Shell Retinax or Mercruiser Marine grease for all other grease type applications. Never washes out / water proof, high psi, high heat and synthetic.

On the 1984 and 1985 rear wheels the dimension shown is 60mm.
There were problems with wheel bearings loosening for these years
so in 1986 this dimension was increased to 65mm for increased strength.



The final drive flange was changed accordingly to accommodate this change:

thanks laim.....i installed the '84 today. do you think i should hunt an '86-'87 and change? the wheel bearing loose is the reason i replaced the wheel. being the third owner maybe my wheel was an '84 and didn't know. i threw it away before checking. if i check for rear wheel wobble this summer when on center stand is that a good indicater of the wheel bearing condition?

Did you use the '86 drive spigot unit or did you get one to match the '84 wheel?

The problem using the 86 spigot on the 84 wheel is the dimension difference on
the spigot part which slides over the wheel bearing housing, this would be very loose
and offer no support to the wheel bearing housing. You may also experience some vibration
as the spigot drive is held in place only by the cush drives.

I made up a shrink ring to make up the difference on my 84 aspy.
