checking final drive and u joint

Greetings, Putting on a new set of tires and have some questions.
I will grease the pins and splines of course. I would like to grease the wheel bearings but my Haynes manual says it is not possible to remove them without ruining them.......?
I would also like to make sure they are not having the spun race problem.
My bike has 48k miles is it advisable to replace the u joint?
Anything else I should consider while in there?

My 85 Interstate has 99000+ miles on it and the u-joint is still good. I lube the joint splines with Moly 60 whenever I change the rear tire. If your joint has no looseness in the joint itself and the splines are still tight, I wouldn't change it. The joint runs in a sealed environment so dirt and water (major wear factors) shouldn't be a problem.

you already have your answer, but my 84I has 144,000 and the u-joint has no play in it whatsoever.
(now Murphys Law is gonna kick in )
As was mentioned, keep that boot in good shape and theroetically, the u-joint should last.
