Gas coming out of left exhaust then--
|

This morning went to start the bike and at first sounded like battery was weak(was on battery tender and charged) then fired normal--then gas started coming out of left exhaust--stayed running but idle higher than normal-around 1350-1400rpms. Smoking alot out of exhaust--after it warmed up seemed to run ok but idle still high and smoking but after awhile idle started dropping back to normal around 1050 but didn't seem to run like normal-not smoking like before and gas not coming out of pipe. Stayed like this for awhile then the idle started to drop and will die. Also seems to be a little noise in left head-no knocking just more than normal.
Any thoughts on what happened? ![]() (02-12-2015, 08:21 AM)yiterp Wrote: This morning went to start the bike and at first sounded like battery was weak(was on battery tender and charged) then fired normal--then gas started coming out of left exhaust--stayed running but idle higher than normal-around 1350-1400rpms. Just went back out and started it(been like a hour) seems normal and idle is were it should be. Did a float stick in one of the carbs and needed to run awhile to free its self up. Bike had been setting couple of weeks without starting

Are you sure it's gas coming out of the exhaust & not water ? What color was the smoke ? It could be a leaking head gasket.

White smoke points to water getting into the combustion chamber. When a head gasket just starts to leak it will let just a small amount of water into the combustion chamber & when the engine is started it will smoke for a bit ( it's actually steam ). it also depends on the position of the pistons when the engine is shut off as to weather it smokes at all.

.... regardless, this is something to keep an eye on.
As was mentioned, the color of the 'smoke' is an indicator of where to start looking. White or grey 'smoke' may be water leaking into the combustion chamber as was mentioned. If the white or grey smoke lingers and does not dissipate, it is more likely not steam. The next time it does this, cup your hand down by the exhaust pipe tip and let your hand take on the aroma of the smoke. Now smell your hand. Does it have a sweet smell to it? It will smell sweet if you are running a coolant and you have a gasket leak. If you are running straight water, your hand will smell more like exhaust, but may be damp. Is your hand wet? Is there more vapor coming out of the pipes than usual? If it smells like gas, you may have had a float stick. Raw fuel coming out the tail pipe or leaking from the exhaust seams is never a good thing! Keep an eye on this less your bike goes up in a flame of glory. Do you store your bike on the side stand or the center stand? Center stand is preferred since the side stand can allow oil, (water from a defective head gasket), or gas, to leak past the piston rings and cause problems until it is burned off or blown out or the engine quits. Water in the combustion chamber can cause a higher compression for the battery to overcome, so what may seem to be a weak battery may be the early signs of a leaking head gasket. Understand this, the bike is telling you EXACTLY what is wrong with it. The problem is, you don’t understand the language it is using. Ride Safe. -Ride On
