Looking at a '86 SEI and gathering opinions
Well it's been awhile so I wanted to strike up some discussion. There's a guy local to me that's looking to sell his SEI. It's got ~47k miles on it and has been sitting for a couple years. I was wondering if anyone has had an LTD or an SEI that they can pass along their experiences or insight? This one isn't pretty (from sitting in a pole barn), but it did fire up as soon as he hit the button so there's that. I'll be doing the wrenching which will keep the labor cheap. Thanks in advance for the discussion!

have an SEI and an 87 Aspy and between the 2 i like the SEI best, first thing i would do is see if the electrical system charges correctly after mc has been running for 10 mins or so,SEI are well known for having overheated connections in charging circuits do to larger stator output than the aspy's, i would also want to at least take a ride around the block to see if it has any problems with the fuel injection system, specifically the TS(throttle sensor)
lots of sensors on the SEI's and LTD's so be prepared to diagnose if need be

I understand that it started right up, but you also said it has been sitting? If it's been a couple of years, you need to flush the old fuel out of the lines and inspect the tank for rust. Injectors are too easily contaminated and fuel tanks for SEi's are not plentiful.

These guy's pretty much hit it on the head!! The only thing I've got to add is if the tanks IS rusted, there's a pretty good electrolysis tank derusting thread using a 12vdc battery charger over at Steve's old site that might be helpful!! As Mike said, those "Fuelie" gas tanks are as rare as hen's teeth!!

Correct me if I'm wrong but the only difference I see in the tanks is the fuel return fitting which would be easy to add to any tank.

Sorry about kicking glhonda out of this thread but that's his problem not mine.

He did say that the stator and voltage regulator have both been recently replaced (before it was parked) but the last time I looked at it I didn't go prepared enough to check voltages across any parts. Good call on the tank rust too. I lucked out on the '77 being stored dry and rust free. Thanks for all the replies so far!

I know they are great bikes when they are working well. There are a lot of work a-rounds for many issues that may crop up.

I almost bought one just before I bought my '85-A in 1995 but the one I bought was a well cared for and garaged when not in use veteran of 26,000 miles for $5,000 whose prior two owners were both people I had some knowledge of. The '85 Ltd I passed on had sat out in the weather just under the edge of a carport and had an unknown history, about same miles, needed some cosmetic work, and was only priced a few hundred $$$ less .... but it ran great .... then.

That's my biggest issue right now on this bike CrystalPistol. It's been in a pole barn, but the floor is gravel and the surface rust is creeping up on it. The add-on chrome bits don't worry me nearly as much as the factory hard parts that i can see being affected (and the parts I can't see). The price is right, but the unknowns could be costly

any used mc is a gamble regardless of "looks", never seen almost any mc sold with an iron clad guarantee, especially if its 30 years old

You're correct Ken. The main difference is the fuel return fitting which can be compensated for by a "T" fitting in the line going to the fuel pump letting the fuel to "return" to the fuel tank.

That Said...

You make one more remark about ANY MEMBER.. That'll be your problem..... Not mine... Consider this a Warning....

Now.. Back to our thread......

the sei does have a fuel return inlet but also the fuel outlet which goes to the fuel pump is on the bottom of the tank NOT on the side as on the Aspy's and Int's

That does make using any other tank more difficult, not impossible mind you just much more difficult. Wink

Well gents the SEI road seemed to be a dead end, but the door to a really sharp 1200 standard opened up so I stepped on through. Again, I really appreciate all the input and feedback on this thread!
