another new guy
Hello from Elkhorn, NE. I bought a 84 Aspencade in April and like it so far. Experiencing some of the same charging problems as the rest of you all. Hard starts when its hot and about 12.9 volts @3000 rpm. This forum has excellent info, I'm glad I found it. My bike is in great shape and has around 41,000 on the clock. Don't know if it has helped, but my bike has the Dave Campell wiring harness available from Ray's engine out of Kankakee, IL. IF any one knows about this harness, I'd like to here from you. Just wanted to say hello and let you know you have another goldwing fan in your midst.

Hello and welcome 84cade. Without trying to run down your aftermarket harness I'll just say that I've seen at least 3 Gold Wings run better without them. Check the charging forums for some sound advice and start thinking about an external alternator. I've had one on my 84 for over 5 years with absolutely no problems and no regrets.

Hi Vic,
my 84I only has 24000mls and I hear the tales of the stator issue around 60k. Do you have a rough estimate of the cost comparrisions between replacement vs add ons. I do mean rough..........

Hoofman, have you hard-wired the stator yet? That's the number one step I'm told.

Welcome to this great site, 84cade. There aren't many questions you can ask about your 'Wing that can't be answered by the membership.

There's too many variables to quote a price hoofman. Set up a scenario such as DYI with used parts or shop does it with new parts and then I can ballpark it.

Welcome Hoofman.

OK "Bike wont go" You have to give us something to go on there could be lots of things causing it.

Does the engine turn over when you turn the key on and hit the starter?

Yes.... Check for gas and spark

No..... Check that battery is good.

Battery bad

Yes... have it checked or replaced

No.... make sure it is fully charged and check the stator leads.

Check the 30 amp fuse at the right side of the battery and the general state of the plastic plug at the solenoid (behind the 30 amp fuse)

Check the plug on the left side of the battery if it looks burnt that could be your problem.

If it looks healthy disconnect the coupler and with an ohm meter check each of the yeallow wiresd to ground (None of the leads should have continuity)

Then check each of the leads to one another there should be continuity on all three.

If either of these tests fail your alternator probably is shot.

Do these checks then we can go from there.
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

Thanks all. From what I've been reading, all phases of the bike are covered! Great info. Rode about 250mi. on Saturday and checked the battery when I got home and had 12.8 volts with a digital meter. keeping my fingers crossed. Although i know something should be done soon. I do have the original owners manual w/ some entries from 1984 till about 1991. looks like oil changes and so on. Also have the owners name address and phone #. Maybe I'll look him up and ask a few ?'s .
Thanks again-- 84 Cade.
