still trying to help a friend out--i found a good running 1978 goldwing motor but the rest of the bike is rough for 125.00--can the 78 motor be installed in a 82 interstate without to many problems

I've read somewhere that the engine is the same size so it might fit on the frame with no problems.. anyway make sure asking the experts good luck!!

Something way in the back of my mind tells me that there might be a problem with the shifter switch electrical hookup, coolant temp switch, and the clutch cable but I'm not an expert on the older GL's so check at that site I gave you above.

the frame/engine match is pretty much the same... but everything runs down-hill from there... wiring harness's are TOTALLY different... ignition is completely different...
and, unfortunately (as I own a 1978) the 78-9 are lowest on the "performance" totem pole of all the 1000's
78 GL1000 (original owner), 86 1200 with motorvation sidecar (wife's), 05 Road King, and 75 frame and lots of parts

what I was trying to suggest is that it absolutly will not be an easy one for one switch, you will be having to change a whole bunch of things to get it to work.... and considering the loss of performance going from an 1100 to the slower of the 1000's would not make it a worth-while swap out
