To replace a 84 1200 Interstate fuel cell
Local mechanic wants $480 to replace fuel tank.
Is this out of line?
My parts. :?:

You can base your estimate on this.
Personally I would rather put that IN the gas tank than into someone else's pocket but that's your choice.

Remove the seat and top compartment
Siphon any fuel from the tank
Remove the rear fender and rear shock absorbers.
Remove the rear wheel.
Disconnect the overflow tube from the overflow tray.
Remove the cross plate from the frame.
Disconnect the fuel gauge sensor and ground terminals
from the sensor.
Remove the battery and battery holder from the frame.
Remove the rear brake fluid reservoir from the frame.
Remove the nut holding the fuel filter bracket to the fuel tank.
Turn the fuel valve off and remove it from the fuel tank.
Remove the fuel tank mount bolt.
Move the fuel tank to the rear and out of the frame.
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

Manual doesnt call for frame to be removed but you will of course need to remove the luggage boxes in order to remove the shocks and wheel.

I did mine myself cuz I couldn't find anyone who would do it. If you know the mechanic and he's a good one, Yeah, I'd pay that much.

Now to go look for pictures of what it looked like right after I got the tank out!!!!!

the strangest thing.... you will move it and wiggle it and move it again getting nowehere.... then suddenly it will be out.... be sure to put some protection over the right sided bulge or you will scrtah it up
