MOLY 60 PASTE FOR LUBING SPLINES
|
|
|||
There seems to be a lot of confusion about what to use for lubricating the splines and flange on the rear wheel of the GL1200. You cannot use regular grease because it is not high enough pressure lubricant and it can wash away with water. The Honda manual calls for moly 45 grease but this information is over 20 years old. The best stuff available on the market today is moly 60 paste, it is Honda recommended and it comes in a 3 ounce cartridge. It's not cheap but if you consider the cost of replacing worn out parts this high performance lubricant is well worth the price. Wash your splines and flange off with varsol, coat the parts with moly 60 paste and you can be assured that this stuff will do its job reliably for a long time. Order it from your local Honda dealer. Cost $23.

I have been using Moly 60 on my rear splines on my 86 for a few years. It seems to last longer than nay other grease. One thing you don't want to do is let the splines dry out. Very costly!!

I just changed the rear tire and went hunting the Moly 60 to put on the rear splines. The local Honda "super store" didn't have it and didn't seem to know about. :evil: I guess they want stuff to break so they can fix it; like a dentsit who gives out candy bars. I found some Valvoline grease/paste that is "moly fortified", probably 3%. I used it to hold me over until I can get some moly 60 ordered and will then tackle removing the wheel just to add the moly. My splines looked good and well lubed though and I haven't detected any problems so far.

And their cost for shipping USPS Priority to NJ is only $5.55! (the UPS cost is twice that, go figure).

moly 60 sounds great. i believe highland cycle uses it also. i do wonder if mobil 28 hi temp synthetic grease will work? we use it on the C-17 for everything that gets greased(wheel bearings,landing gear,
the "T"tail jackscrew,and anything with a grease fitting).it is rated for 500 degrees f and is water restistant. |

Although mobil 28 hi temp synthetic grease sounds like a terrific lubricant I don't believe that it's appropriate for this application because because moly 60 is called for and mobil 28 hi temp synthetic grease does not have a spec of moly in its composition. Perhaps a lubricant specialist would know better but for my money I would stick with the moly 60 on my Gold Wing until I had proof that something better was available.

Do you guys ever pull off the flange from the wheel and grease the fingers before reinserting it or do you just grease the splines?

I clean and grease the fingers as well, I think most places where metal on metal is rubbing should be greased. I believe it also says to grease the pins in the manual.
