Howdy, I'm another newby to the GW1200 crowd. I just picked up a 1985 Aspencade, 52k, $2000, runs great, seems like a good deal. I used to run Triumphs. What do I need to know about this machine to keep it in top shape and what problems should I look out for? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. Saddleman

The biggest thing to check is whether the Stator is functioning properly, and if the stator plug has been removed and the leads hardwired. Check out the forum articles in the electrical section. Another good source at this site is the Tech Center. Many good tips & mods. You will find a lot of good people and good information here.

Welcome saddleman from Ontario Canada. The GL1200 is a great bike and the members in this site can help you keep it in top condition. Kwatts has given you some good info, some other things to look for is when was the timing belts changed last. If you can find out the P/O service records it would help you out. The final drive needs to have the splines cleaned and greased about every two years, lf you don’t know when the bike was serviced last I would change the engine oil and filter, final drive oil, change the break and clutch fluid, Check the air cleaner and spark plugs, check the suspension air pressure and condition of the tires and their pressure.
