Timing Belts 84-85 86+ could be similar
Nice tip on autozone, just went down and bought the last one at 1 store, and the last one at another. I'll discard the no name belts from ebay.
I'll let you know how it goes...
Thx, lex

I would not use those suspicious timing belts. Get a brand name like Gates, Dayco, Napa etc. and be done with it.

She lives! Got brand name timing belts, put er back together and runs great. Now putting radiator back on, etc... Thanks for this great website! When are we going to all meet together in one place?

Neighbors on either side of me have gl1500's, 2 houses down is another gl1200. The 1500 owners are jealous of this great resource...does anyone know of a similar site for 1500's?

OK on the first page someone mention torque specs for tension on timing belts. On another page someone mentioned setting the airgap on the pulse generator. Is there a "trick" to setting the torque on the belts correctly and what where and how do you set the airgap on a pulse generator on a 84 Apencade?

If you use the method in the Honda manual, (I did post it a while ago but even I cant find it) That will give you the correct tension. and the air gap is not adjustable... dont ask me why Honda put it in the manual.... at least not on the 85+ models.
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

Thanks. I have put in a powerpoint the info I found at this link <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/forum9/17422.html">http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/forum9/17422.html</a><!-- m --> which is for a GL1000. I modified it to match what we need for our GL1200's. Changed part numbers, etc.
If anyone needs it I have it in .pdf format. Just let me know and I will email it to you. If someone already has one posted please tell us where so we can print it. Thanks

On my 85 I did put the new belts on using your instructions. I rotated counterclockwise so the tensioner could take up the slack. Tightened them down. (I am guessing no to using any type of loctite on these bolts?) Then rotated the engine manually. Rechecked the marks.

On the right side and crank it was still perfect. The left side seemed to be off 1 tooth.

Can I just loosen the left belt and adjust by hand the cam back 1 tooth and reapply the belt?

[quote="wpgfire"]Just finished changing the belts on my '87 yesterday. Went without a hitch, though I had to take the rad out for the first time of any of my numerous belt changes. It was my first change on a 1200. Kinda tight with the rad in there. Got the covers off but knew I wouldn't have a hope getting them to go back in . [quote]

anyone have advice to offer on the highlighted?
I just want to check them, not change.

Yes, but recheck the marks on both sides afterwards because sometimes they can be tricky if you're not careful enough.

In tricky's initial post, he shows a pic with an arrow pointing to the "timing hole". It looks like it has a cap with a slot for a flathead screwdriver. What is it, and what do you use it for? I have an '86 Aspy and am just learning about it.

That hole is used to indicate crankshaft position and very helpful when replacing timing belts. If you spin the engine by hand using the bolt at the back of the alternator you'll see markings such as TDC etc. on the wheel that turns inside the hole. To actually check ignition timing you need a timing window which is a clear plastic plug just like the aluminum one with the slot and then you shine a timing light through that plug to check timing although ignition timing is not adjustable.

SO many people don't know where it is so here is the timing hole.
Here's with the cap off. And if you leave it off and start the bike, oil will fly everywhere.
