Rear wheel splines failed
Well, the flange on the rear wheel, that I knew needed replacement, failed on me last night. Managed to get the bike home on a trailer. I'll take it apart in the next coupe of days to find out if I need to replace the final drive as well. Fortunately the flange is available from HDLparts, but the final isn't available new anywhere. Well, I got some work ahead!

That's too bad Gary but at least it is not that bad of a job. Here are some final drives on e-bay.

I used a 1500 final drive and it works great.

Bluewing, does using the 1500 final necessitate going with the 1500 rear wheel?

No Gary, I used my 1200 wheel, it fit with no problem. The only thing I had to do was drill the 4 holes in the swing arm where the final drive bolts on one size bigger to get the bolts through, the 1500 bolts are a bit bigger. Other than that it fit right on. I was lucky, I got the 1500 final drive from a guy who triked his bike right after he got it new so there was less than 1000 miles on it.

Wow, guess the seller's think their final drives are dipped in gold. But then again if I needed one I'd pay the price.

Vic has installed a 1500 final drive on his 1200 and has found a problem. The bolt that holds the black plastic dust cover on it rubbing on the rear wheel rim flange. He is working on how to solve the problem and will let us know what has to be done when he is finished. My bike is an 86 and I didn't seem to have that problem so we don't know at this time why his is rubbing but he will find out and let us know.
