Interchangeable Starters
I have an 84 Interstate in need of a starter rebuild and would like to have a rebuilt unit on hand to minimize down time but the 84s are few and far between.
What modifications are needed to use an 85 – 87 unit in place of the 84?

Thanks in advance folks.

all i know about it is that you cant use an 84 in place of the 85-87 since the 84 is a 3 leg bolt pattern,i'm sure someone will chime in that has an 84 shortly

It is not possible to use any other starter other than the 84 because 85 to 87 are physically much larger including a larger spline on the end of the starter. The power lug is in a different location as well though this could be dealt with easily. Unfortunately you have to use the 84 starter but the good news is that they work great with new brushes, bushing and a good solid ground at the grounding plate.

My initial idea was to minimize down time by having a rebuilt at the ready when I pulled the original off. I guess I will just have to deal with some down time if I can’t find a donor ’84 starter.

Thanks for the input.

only takes about an hour to refurb the starter if you dont have to replace bearings or anything
