Engine cutout while riding
I put about 250 miles on my 86 Interstate this weekend. Twice, while at operating temp, both while under acceleration the bike shut off and as I rolled to a stop I did try to jump it and it would backfire. Both times it restarted after a minute or two and everything seemed to be fine. I read some other posts where this was happening but this does not seem to be the whole bike shutting off, just the engine.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

BB

Exact symptoms I had this year. As much as I wanted to deny it, it was failing head gaskets causing the stall and backfires. Checking coolant level, condition of spark plugs and a compression test is going to get you more information. The symptoms are confusing because even though it would stall, backfire, and restart, it hummed great at 70mph down the highway. Did new head gaskets and have done over 4000 miles and no more issues.

sounds like either a problem with the kill switch circuit or possibly the pulse generators going bad
have you done any work on it recently where connectors may have been involved?

It sounds like the pulse generators. Had the same problem.I changed the pulse generators and knock on wood, haven,t had a problem since.

problem with pg's us that doing a resistance check is almost worthless since once bike cools off they will read fine, once engine gets warm they can quit working and ten minutes later will start bike and maybe last all way home

they are still available for around $80 new, dont buy used since basically you might end up with same problem or someone on ebay could be selling u ones that are intermitment just like you have

course there are other things that might cause same problem but you'll have to trace them out,not much help when you are broken down on side of road ten miles or more from home i know

Good advice so far. I would do a leakdown test on each cycl. Then the cooling system. Look closely at the p g. and kill switch ignition and so on. Just my 2cts.

I just purchased the wing. I am a new rider. Lots of works was done on it but not the stator or PG's. I thought that if the PG's were going bad that the bike would not start up again until it cooled down?

with the pg's it doesn't always require a complete cool down
that's what makes diagnosing problem with pg's so confusing, which is why replacing with a used set is a crapshoot

No new suggestions but encouraging thoughts. At least the pg’s are in the front of the engine. Mine are on the back since she is a 1984.

Good Luck
