Smells like gasoline
You probably got some rotted fuel hose debris inside the needle valve and seat. Unfortunately the carbs will have to come off to fix it. Might as well get a Randakk kit and fix it right if the leaking continues but you could get lucky and have the debris break up in the carb and goodbye problem but don't bank on it.

Well I finally got r did. I used the clear fuel line from Cycle Gear and little squeeze clamps from Napa. A friend of mine helped me and took my carbs apart before ordering the kits and found out the float bowl gaskets were shot. Replaced those and it runs like a champ. I'm probably going to be getting her ready to sell due to the fact that I have 5 bikes in the garage and a very weary and understanding wife. A note to all, don't let them set up for the winter if you can avoid it.

I have one more line to replace when I change fuel pump. I have changed the two lines on either side of filter already. I did notice while I had hose off tank & gas shut off, it would still drip about every 30 sec. I thought I read that when ignition is off there is a valve that closes to shut off fuel without the need to close valve when parked. Does anyone know if it would need new valve, solenoid or both? I have to take side cover off to get to on/off valve, but would like to make sure there's no flow when parked a few weeks.

OK fellows over the last few rides I have developed a heavy gas smell at times , It seams to be worse when i ride at freeway speeds, i.e. 70 mph or more for any length of time, then the smell is bad when I stop to fuel have a smoke break or eat, then on restart it will backfire on the right side exhaust .. I treated the fuel system today with some sea foam , going to run a tank or two with the sea foam in hopes it's a sticking float or just a dirty carb.. so any ideas ? i have checked all the fuel lines and there are no leaks to be seen.

Thanks
Tony
