white smoke with excessive fuel consumption
i purchased a bike that sat outside for two years with 122,000 miles. i found hornet nests behind headlite and beehive in a vent! i fixed the problems and got my sei running, thanks to you all. the bike ran pretty good. but i haven't been on the road yet, i'm still on the updating stage. this week it started white or gray smoking and smells. the only change i made was changed the oil and added 4 oz. seafoam to it. then i changed plugs to the uridium ngk's hoping that would help. friends suggested doing a compression check, so here's the result:
dry/wet
#1.) 140/190
#2.) 145/190
#3.) 140/210
#4.) 130/190
also running at idle half hour burned almost a gallon of fresh fuel, i thought burnt fuel was black smoke? i'm not getting any codes on ecu. does any one have any suggestions?

the smoke and smell is the seafoam at work I would say.

thanks tricky... i used inexpensive oil and was told ride with 4oz.seafoam in it for 100 miles. then change to the same synthec oil the previous owner used.(amsoil)
is this sound advice? what do you think of compression readings? and the fuel consumption?

A few things about the white smoke.
Is there a sweet smell to it?
How is the level of the antifreeze?
Did you add the 4 ozs of seafoam after topping off the oil?
If you added with the full capacity of oil then it is 4 ozs over filled. All three could cause some white smoke.
As far as the comperession those readings are good for the miles on the bike. The excessive use of fuel could be from a stuck carb float.
As far as the oil, use what works with a wet clutch system. Amsoil is good stuff if you want to pay the cost of it. Just don't use anything with friction modifiers. Causes clutch slippage.
I agree with tricky, heavy concetration of seafoam can cause white smoke.

oops, I saw you have an SEI. Is it fuel injected? If so, disregard the stuck floats.

Fuel consumption is a bit excessive. I would definitely check your mpg when riding and see what it is. You should be at least around the 40mpg range. That's what I get on a bad day. Haven't joined GWRRA yet. Will get to that this summer though. I'm over in the 17 mi/Schoenherr area.

When you idle the bike for any long time you need to put a fan in front of the radiator for air flow. GW's get hot if not moving. What was the smell you had from the exhaust?

That would be the seafoam. It's potent stuff. If there was no sweet smell then it's not coolant. Good thing.
