Just wondering, are your kits the same as poorboy's or are they more like the setup that you have on your wing. Just want that clarified.

Good morning Vic. I am going to bee getty my alt within the next month and after reading a lot of threads here & there on this subject, I was hoping you could answer a question for me. Don's kit has a 2 3/8" pulley. How big would the pulley on the alt need to be to charge @ 1000 engine RPM's? I am going with a 55 amp denso. Thanks a bunch Vic. :) :) :)

Hey Angela,
just wanted you to know, it's really great to see women like yourself getting into this MC stuff and doing your own work. I think it's great!

Thanks Myplace, I wish I could do more. I have all the tools ( Mech & woodworking), a lot of ability but I don't have the body anymore to be able to crawl around on the ground. :x :x :x :x And I just found out today that id I want to change a bulb or all of them I have to remove my bag & trunk rails to get the lenses out. The trunk rail has a light bar on it as well and soon (maybe tomorrow) so will the bag rails. More work to do. I have always done this kind of thing. So long as you have the manuels, take your time & keep things clean, it is not difficult to do work on any bike. I split the case of a 500 S/W in 1990 for a friend of mine, to replace a leaking gasket. The honda dealer I bought the parts from was very straight forward with advice & warnings of what to watch for.

The alternator pulley will remain at 2 3/8" Angela and ideally you want to find another pulley for the crankshaft that is the same on the inside and outside as the alternator pulley but you want it to be as close to 3 3/4" in diameter as possible. This will overdrive, speed up the alternator so that it will charge at low speeds. You might have to have a machine shop shop make this pulley for you if local auto electric shops don't have the pulley. Should cost between $60 -$100. depending on who does it. The alternative it to have your local auto electrics shop set up your alternator for low speed charging duty. Call around and get some prices and let me know what they say. They do this for taxis and police cars mostly and down here if the alternator is off the car it costs between $20 and $40 dollars, more if on the car obviously.

Thanks Vic. I think I can do the calculations from your suggestions. The pulley that came with the Poor Boy Kit is 2 3/8" and this is for the crank. I should be able to get the right ratio from what you said. Thanks :) :) :) :)

Yeah, I know the feeling, I try not to get down to low to the ground unless I have at least 3 or 4 other things to do while I'm down there!
you got your work cut out for you girl but that's what makes it fun, right?
