While down in Fla. last Christmas I managed to finally hook-up with Poorboy for about an hour or so and discuss the merit's of Gl1200 ownership, traveling around to different places, the price of rice in China, etc.... In other words a nice little meet and greet and one that I'd been looking forward to ever since I'd first found info about his alt. conversion!! 8)

He had the black '84 Standard with him that I'm gonna buy from him when we get done haggling! I believe it'll only take about 8-10 years of me pleading and begging before we make a deal..

:YMPRAY:

Here's a few pic's of the bike.

Marty,

To decide which bike to ride a lot depends on where I plan on riding & which one has the most gas. Out of all of them I guess the black Standard is my favorite. I took the black one on my trip to Florida last month. I'm going back to Florida next week to visit & fly a T-6G Texan & will take the blue 85 Interstate. I try to ride each one at least once a month for a 100 miles or so. Rode about 200 miles yesterday.

Ride Safe, Don

Hmmmmmm

That price just went up!!!!!

After careful inspection of the pictures, I can see that the frame is bent and the neck is twisted.
The bike looks okay though.... :- :- #-O

Did you happen to get to ride that standard? I've often wondered if they ride, handle and accelerate differently than the Aspy or if it's just a matter of less clutter when you look around.

No I didn't Vic.. But after finaly looking at one in person I'd say it's got to be a touch more of a "Hot Rod" than a faired 1200.. Don would be the one to ask as he's got both..

My guess is besides the extra 80 lbs or so a full dress bike pushes more wind aside than a standard giving more horse power towards forward movement with the standard....

But, the fairing on the Aspy can potentially make the bike more streamlined allowing it to go faster with the same horsepower.

This is true but you have to consider that tall windshield and, looking at the faired bike from the front, it's got more area that's gonna catch wind the faster you go!

A wise man once told me that it's not the amount of horsepower you've got, it's the horsepower to weight ratio (plus traction) that'll win the race! Since the stock engine on all GL1200 models is the same horsepower but the Standard has less weight, (and a lower center of gravity?), due to having less Tupperware, I'd have to lean towards the Standard as having the upper hand in the twisties, 1/4 mile, time to top end speed, etc.

This is all just conjecture on my part and I have no hard proof as to which bike is faster. However we need to remember one thing. Mother Honda made the original Goldwing, the 1975 GL1000, as a bike that would kick some serious butt on the street. There was only 1 factory bike that would hang with her and that was the '75 KZ 900 which in my opinion is another "Legend of the Street"!! The 1984 Standard was the last "Streetfighter" Goldwing and I'd like to have one for that reason if no other!! That or a 1975 GL1000 because that's the begining of the Legend that we're riding today!!

Blue, of course!!

It would be fun to have one of each of those bikes you mention but unfortunately my garage can only fit my bike and my car comfortably so I'll have to be happy with dreaming about all those other great bikes.
