The term "football field" - which has become an official television unit of measurement for length and sometimes area as in "Bobby and his team are faced with moving the 237 ton house 5 football fields before the moon collides with the asteroid! The are RUNNING OUT OF TIME!! (cue rock music..)" ...
- does it refer to an American Football field?
- a Canadian Football field?
- an Aussie Football field?
- a football field as in "soccer" pitch?

Here we go, your football should be called handball, I think the girls play a game called that in UK. One would think a game requiring one to continually use your feet would be called football.

I would gather the distance would have to vary depending on where the broadcast is coming from! Obviously a Canadian broadcast would be 110 yards, or maybe some sort of metric equivalent?

I would think American football field. But...depends on how one visualizes it....When you look at an American football field it is actually 120 yards. The game field is 100 yards with two 10 yard end zones (which is part of the part of the game field). When I set in the stands of an American football field I visualize the field as from goal post to goal post...120 yards.

So, with out me doing some conversions. I would bet 120 yards is about 100 meters....and I think that's about the size of a soccer/futbol field.

But what do I know....I'm just from Miss Sippy.

Since they don't play meat eatin' God fearin' football anywhere but the good ol' US of A......it's three hundred feet and it takes a Nation League team 22 minutes to get from half way to the end.

Actually, the NFL has been playing one game a year in Wembley Stadium in the UK. Last season it was the NY Giants vs New England Patriots. This year, October 31st, it will host the San Francisco 49'ers vs the Denver Broncos. NFL has been talking about hosting a game in Canada too.

From Wikipedia:
"The Canadian field of play is 110 yards long by 65 yards wide - (101 m by 59 m), rather than 100 yards long by 53⅓ yards wide - (91 m by 49 m) as in American football."
and about Aussie rules football:
"The playing field, which may be approximately 150 metres (or more) long goal to goal and 135 metres (or more) wide boundary line to boundary line wing to wing. Approximately 3 to 5 metres of boundary line space from the boundary line to the fence is also required."

So it must be American football fields they are using for the unit of measure. The 53⅓ yards wide dimension would be critical to the viewer understanding the size or length of whatever it is :d

A real football field is one where real men run around kicking a real ball with their real feet nonstop for 45 mins. each half of the game. This field and football game is played by every country in the world, kind of like a real sized gallon.

:-

Then you have the American football field where they use a ball that is no longer round, and almost nobody uses their feet, they 'play?' for a few seconds, entirely glad in protective gear like the Michelin man on steroids, and then they stand around for five minutes talking about it, (still the cheerleaders do help to keep the spectators entertained) and the field is the wrong size too, kind of like the American gallon?

I hope the size of the Canadian fields doesn't tire the boys out too much. :d

My last comment on football fields... I promise... I'm not saying one of the four games called "football" is better than another ... it's just funny to hear the term "football field..." used to measure everything on the almost real life tv shows...

Lots of times if you do the math they are talking about, they've missed it by a country mile!

So, is a country mile different than a regular mile? As long as don't start missing by a country kilometer!
