Progressive 416 Help

I finally got around to putting the 416's on yesterday. When I took the cap off of the inlet for the air hose, there was a small black washer/grommet inside, that came out. I installed the air line as shown in the instructions, but when I went to do the other side, the black washer/grommet was pushed further down in the inlet. It got me to wondering, is this piece supposed to stay or be removed? The instructions don't indicate one way or the other. I put a call in to Progressive and am awaiting a call back. Any thoughts?. Thanks a bunch.

It sure had me wondering at the time, they need to be removed.
