Chrome mirror backs
Today I was cleaning up an extra set of mirrors that I have. One of them the chrome cover plate had become detached from the mirror back so wanting to get the old double stick tape off the back was gonna be a real chore. Being the type that is always looking for an easier way I decided to try some paint remover, Aircraft Paint Stripper to be exact. It worked great but that's not the real story. The original back was a grey matte type finish and I just assumed it was the finish of the plastic, well when the stripper touched it, it started bubbling off and lo and behold the original chrome that was under the original paint started shinning through! Looked way better than the metal covers that were on there so I popped off the other metal back and did the same to it. Look great! The mirrors on my bike had the same finish on them so I gave them the same treatment.

Now here is where you need to pay attention. You are working with PAINT REMOVER!!!!!! If you get it on anything it will remove the PAINT!!!! Mask off everything around the mirror back, cover everything under, around or next to the mirror (if you are doing this while they are still on the bike). The remover works super fast, I mean like in seconds so put it on and wipe it right off with a soft cloth. Do not use paper towels, paper towels scratch plastic. When you get done rinse the whole thing with water to neutralize any missed remover.

I have no idea how well the plastic chrome will hold up for the long haul, I guess worse case scenario is that I have to go back with chrome metal covers or a grey matte paint?? I guess time will tell.

OK, confused. But that is easily done. Are you saying that there should be chrome under the black paint on back of the stock original mirrors on my 85 Interstate?
