The AM/FM on my 1985 aspy was not working properly.

The dial indicated AM even when it was on FM, it could not tune due to this.

only AM worked.

I pulled the radio, removed the top and bottom case plates,

located and sprayed all of the moving contacts with contact cleaner, all buttons and dials.

this cured the problem.

While I was working on it, I also renewed the dial window, it was oxidized and I was barely able to see through it.

I took a small amount of mothers aluminum polish, "the white stuff"
and lightly buffed the lens by hand, looks like new now!!!!!

I also did the plastic case and the clock with mothers also, it all lookes new now..

Well, the radio went south.

I guess its just shot.

If it was working after you sprayed the contacts it might be OK. Check the plug at the back of the radio, close each of the contacts carefully, after a time these open up.
Check the fuses under the left pocket.

Remove the radio and check the voltages at the plug
Top row left to right
pin 7 ignition off should be voltage
pin 6 ignition on should be voltage
pin 8 and/or 9 ground.

everything seems to work, just shows its on am, when it is on FM, the tuner works but it will not stop on any station, I have never seen this before in any radio. works fine on AM as far as the tuner display goes but there is no sound at all.

I have worked all the knobs, and the mute button. also the headset switch,
cant get it working.

Hey Jim,
Welcome to the nightmare of owning a dream bike! :lol: if you've worked all the switches on the radio and the handlebars the next step is to pull the left side faring pocket, CB radio and tank shelter and of course the seat. Itâs not really that bad. All the plugs are color coded, (color tape around wire) pull them all apart and make sure they are in good condition. If I recall you said this bike was sitting for quite awhile, right? Things have a way of corroding while they just sit. Also make sure all the rubber jackets that keep out the moisture are soft and pliable. Did it start acting up after you gave it a bath? If so, Iâd let it sit in the sunshine for several hours with everything opened up to make sure it all gets nice and dry. Something to keep in mind while youâre grumbling about all the hassle. Back in the 80âs when these were new and a dollar would buy you two gallons of gas, the audio system on your bike cost over $2000.00! It really is a piece of workmanship.

Jim, one other thought... if you have sombody close by that has an aspy, try switching radios with him. it will tell you where you need to look for the problem! :wink:

OK, for future reference.

will the intercom still work should I have to replace the radio with a more modern unit?

If I cant get this one repaired, I would like to install a new AM/FM/CD with remote, so I can still have the controls on the left handlebar.

The intercom and the radio work as a unit although the radio will work without the intercom I don't think any other radio will allow you to work with the integrated intercom.
I suggest you have Sierra look at the radio if your sure that that is the problem.

If you installed a new radio you could use any controls that come with that radio but the wiring of the Panasonic would not be compatible.

I would strongly suggest you have the original repaired if you want all the components integrated.
