Rear air shock upgrades
fysty-1, afraid this would kill the motorcycle spring. Big difference in the coil diameter and the working tension of the auto spring as compared to the motorcycle spring. I would suggest using a spring tester to test compression rates to find a spring that works best for both auto and bike applications.

When I raced in the NASCAR Weekly Asphalt Track Series the boys around here that raced dirt tracks would tease me because I had (and still have) 40 sets of springs in the shop, however I could fine tune the suspension more so than they could. I find that its much safer and more predictable to use springs without cutting them. True there are alot of applications where you can get by with it, but I really don't recommend it.

You'll notice however that the majority of the springs you see cut are of the large diameter coils used on the front suspension, have you ever noticed anyone cutting the coil over springs which mount over the shock housing itself. These are more in line with the motorcycle springs and may not take well to being subjected to heat from a torch or cut off grinder. Just a thought, maybe someone else will have some more accurate experience to share on the subject.

gambler did a great pictorial of tearing down a 1200 engine and rebuilding it. Lots of pictures that you won't see in a service manual.

Angela,
Your welcome, there are just too many variables to mention when working with springs, improper cutting could off set the seat surface area, distort the working loads etc. Motorcycle springs are too small to take a chance with when safety is on the line.

Glad to be of assistance.

You could call up a company that makes springs and see what they have. Progressive makes quite a line of springs so if you had a measure of springs you wanted they could find something pretty close to what you want, so long as it's not a flat out strange measure.
