I just saw this about a GL1800 and my jaw dropped when I saw the repair costs;

40 hours labor to split the cases on a GL1800 and you would probably need 6 weeks of specialized Honda training to do it. That's one major piece of high tech machinery.

On a lesser note, Vic, I've heard it can take up to four hours to change the air filter in an 1800! Compared to ours which takes maybe ten minutes at most.

I'm not suprised at all. When I was trying to get a quote to have a new fuel tank, the cheapest I found was about $800.00. And they were extremly reluctant to do it for that price!!!!

I wonder how many extra parts there will be whey they re-assemble that thing?

Strange that after all these years, Honda is still having some type of alternator issue. Perhaps, they should just suck it up and build their bikes with an external alternator of some type?

Would any of us buy a car or truck with an alternator enclosed in the motor case?

The 1500 & 1800 have external alternators however in the manual for the 1800 in order to remove the alternator on the 1800 the gas tank has to be removed.... kudo's to the poorboy.... 15 mins max to remove the alternator on the 1200...
I think the 1500 alternator is more simple to remove.

Yeah the 1500 alt. comes off real quick.Took me all of 10 min. the first time with the tools in the bike.I found out the hard way.

I think I will keep my 1200, I am very happy with it. My wife ask me if I wanted to get a new 1800 for next spring, I showed her this post and she went out in my shop and started polishing the 1200 and said lets keep her. hock:

There's nothing wrong with an 1800 as long there's nothing wrong with them? They are a beautiful bike to drive but once that warranty is up you are on your own with Ferrari like high tech to manage from your backyard.

I just have to remember that while I get tired of having to do some wrenching on a 23 year old bike, at least I don't have a problem doing it. I'd be afraid to take apart an 1800.

OK.....so now I'm really confused :oops:

If the 1800 has an external alternator, what the heck is an alternator dampener, and why do they have to tear that motor to shreds to repair it?

I've looked at some 1800's, but with all that "stuff" on there I don't know how the heck anybody would know what is there and what isn't...........

Long live my 1200. 8)
