How to identify helmet locks for keying?
I just bought an '86 Interstate which I never thought I could drive! Naturally, there are a few things here and there I want to address and one of them is the helmet locks. I have one ILCO key that works in all locks _except_ the helmet locks. Is there a reason for this: are the helmet locks different?

Is there some way to identify what key will work on the helmet locks?

First you might want to try spraying some WD40 in the locks... It's possible that they are just stiff from lack of use and a bit of corrosion... I for one never really use the helmet locks but rahter just place the helmets in the trunk to secure them... The helmet lock method leaves the helmet turned upside down... The first time it rains with your helmets in this position (makes for a great rain catcher) you too will likely stop using them as well...
If you still want to make use of them, and the WD40 does not do the trick, then you can just remove them and take them to a Honda dealer... They should be able to make a key for them just from the #'s on them... At very least they can make a key based on the bikes serial # (bring that with you as well)... It's possible that the ingintion and trunk locks were changed out at some point in the bikes past and maybe they just didn't change the helmet locks to match...
Another thought is to try your other key (if you have one) as sometimes it's a matter of wear on the key itself (had that once before)...

If you need to get new keys made, a locksmith shop might be a little less costly. Its even better if you can find a place that does locks and safes. I had keys made for an ignition (CX500 Silverwing) for about $4.00 each, the local Honda shop wouldn't do it for less than $26.00.

If you do end up using the helmet locks, get some extensions and it will be much easier to work with.
