New E III's and rear wheel bearing question.

Had the local dealer put E III's on today. As he was working on the rear wheel, he noticed that the rear wheel bearing was loose, meaning that it did not have a snug fit into the wheel. He was able to pull it out very easily with his finger. He said that I would need to replace the rear wheel, because a new bearing would fit the same way. Just wondering if someone can tell me if this problem/solution is on the up-and-up.
He went ahead and put the tire on the wheel. Since I have only been riding a couple years, have had only one other bike, and this is my first new set of tires, I figured I wouldn't be able to tell much difference like those of you that have been riding for years. But I must say that I could immediately feel an improvement in the ride and handling compared to the E II's that were on the bike. Very happy with the result. Now I just need to know if I have a wheel problem and how serious it is.

I have heard of people re-machining and putting a larger bearing in. If it is that loose don't wait too long.
I have heard also people shimming. If you wait too long you will be buying a new wheel
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

My wheel was worn badly on the small bearing side. I milled the wheel to the large bearing size and have a large bearing on both sides now. I also had to shorten the inner spacer to fit. Can't remember how much but it's not hard to measure.
