Gl1200 Rear wheel hub material
Hello All
Since owning my first 81 gl1100 I’ve spent many hours perusing the questions and answers found on this great board. I’ve since acquired an 85 ltd which when acquired, wasn’t developing proper power. Getting it up and running was directed attributed to the information found on this site. While doing various checks I discovered that the right hand rear wheel bearing had worn the aluminum hub out. Hence, this led to several hrs of research to find a viable solution. I’ve decided to replace the wheel with one from an 86 or 87 wing. My understanding is that Honda upgraded these wheel hubs with either a steel insert or metal hub. I’ve located two 87 GL1200’s, but both hubs were pounded out and both were aluminum. I’m hoping someone can enlighten me as to whether all the the GL1200 wheels were aluminum hub, or if in fact there were the upgraded wheels manufactured with steel hubs or inserts directly from the factory?
Thanks
Brian

They are all aluminum. Later models are reinforced with a steel band on the outside of bearing portion of the hub.
Check this post for repair. viewtopic.php?f=78&t=7419

Welcome to the forum Brian.

It's my understanding that all the hubs are aluminum.
There is someone in Ontario that installs a steel sleeve to fix the problem.

Perhaps a more local machine shop could do the same for you.
Also some people have had the bearing bore machined out to take a larger bearing.

Hey Guys
Thanks to all those who replied. This will save me copious amounts of time searching for the Holy Grail of 1200 hubs. Since I had just enough play in the outer race to turn it in the hub (figure about a 1 thousand clearance or so) I decided to try a little Locktight 620 to lock it in place. I’ll monitor it over the biking season and see how it fairs. That should give me a little breathing room while I hunt down another good wheel.
Cheers
Brian

I don't know where you've tried Brian but http://www.straightwings.com/ in Langley has a large inventory of used Goldwing parts.

Hi Ken
Thanks for the source but I checked with him last week and he didn't have anything in the right year. I've got a line on someone back East that parts out early wings and he figures that there may be a suitable doner part in his shop. Have yourself a good 1
cheers

Welcome to the site Brian! I see you're from my hometown. I go over there now and again to visit my father, I'll pm you next time and maybe do coffee.
You'll have to pardon GL and Ken, I think they are actually one person with schizophrenia.

Brian. I think that any GL1200 rear rim will fit your bike.
Yes there are different part numbers but the only changes were as glhonda pointed out the reinforcement ring in later years and different seals.

@Walter: You've met both of us and know that glhonda is butt ugly whereas I'm handsome or is that the other way around?

Edit: By the way Walter why are you on the puter instead of out in the shop working on your beauty?

Yes I have met you both and as for who's ugly and who's handsome, I'd rather not answer that as I'm sure I'll meet you both again and have to answer for my comments!
I wasn't out working on the bike because I had to get ready to get my butt down here to work!

So your at work now? If so what are you doing on the puter instead of working? Confusedhock:

Just kidding Walter, I'm sure your job is 90% boring 5% heart warming and 5% pure horror, my hat's off to you and all your colleagues.

Yes they will...BUT......the drive flanges are also different from year to year. The reinforcement ring was not the only change. If you're buying a wheel, buy the drive flange with it.
